(Act V Scene 2)
(Later in the evening at about
5:00, Mary having been ejected, along with Mama alakara goes to beg Elijah to
accommodate his cousin)
Mama: (at the main entrance) my son, come out!
Elijah: (comes out) eku irole ma (good evening ma) (snubs Mary) hope there is no problem ma.
Mama: (sits down on a bench) sit down. I came because of your cousin.
Elijah: mama I don’t have any cousin
here in Ibadan.
Mary: (kneels) please I beg you in the name of God, have mercy on me. I’m
sorry for what I did.
Mama: (in a pleading tone) you heard what she said. She was blind, now
she can see. She’s become the prodigal child that return from the pleasure of
the world. She offended me too the day she packed and I’ve forgiven her
already.
Elijah: (angrily) this lady is not worth it mama.
Mama: oko mi, emi idariji la n fi n m’okunrin (The act of forgiveness defines
a true refined man)
Elijah: (convinced) if not for God and you mama, ah! All right, I forgive
you. Stand up.
(As she stands up to hug Elijah, a
social worker having a strong smelling perfume passes through the front of the
house. When she smelt the perfume, she feels nauseated and rushes out of the
veranda to vomit, Elijah bring water and he washes her mouth. While this is
going on, mama alakara intermittently keeps looking at her ankle and finger
nails)
Elijah: (holding Mary, looks at mama) I hope it’s not what I’m suspecting.
Mama: when does your period appear and
when last did you have it.
Mary: (hesitantly) I do have it at the tenth day of the month, and..and..(Remembers)
I ought to have it two weeks ago. Why did you ask ma?
Elijah: ehn?
Mama: (disappointedly) she’s about two weeks gone.
Mary: (defiantly) it can’t be! How can I get pregnant? (a memory flashes)
(FLASHBACK)
Peller:
just get me one coke from that small freezer.
(Mary
goes to the freezer and brings out a coke for him. As she bends pours the coke
into a glass cup for him to drink, their eyes locked and Peller stares at her
seductively)
Mary:
(moves towards the door) I got to go now.
Peller: (Grasps her
hands) when I look into your eyes I see fire in there, don’t fight it. Please
give me your heart, I promise not to hurt you (he bury his lips in hers and
gives it a deep suck)
Mary: (pushing him
weakly) we shouldn’t be doing..(Pushes him again) this..I...er can’t..we (she
jerks) have..to…um..(Her guide breaks and she finally give in to the strong pull
of emotion as Peller starts to explore the juicy part of her tongue and lead her
to his 1.5 inches bed like a cow to the slaughter. Spotlights fade)
(END
OF FLASHBACK)
Elijah: (pitifully) I warned you, didn’t I? See what you’ve brought upon
yourself. I think it’s time for me to
call mummy.
Mary: please don’t call my mummy, she’ll
be…
Mama: you should’ve thought of that
before spreading your legs to those yeye
boys. Tan loyun? (Who’s responsible
for the pregnancy?)
Mary: (stutters) it..tis..em..er..p..em
Elijah: (he barks) who?
Mary: (sobbing) it is em..pel..pem.. Peller
Mama: (shouts in awe) ah! Eleri’bu
ni Peller!!! (Peller is an unfortunate being)
(Hearing
this, Mary starts to shed tears uncontrollably)
Elijah: like seriously? Two immaculate
brethren! And when I talked then, I was the blackmailer, ugh? He’s an
executive! He’s this, he’s that! We’re coming from bible study! So this is
where your saintly duties led you to? Whited-sepulchers! You are a shame to the
Christian faith! You and Peller showed yourself to the public as holy brothers
and sisters yet you go in your closet to fornicate and do the abominable. Just
go in and freshen up, we’ll visit Peller when mummy arrives tomorrow. Thank you
so much mama.
(He prostrates for mama. The lights
fade as mama stands to leave)
(Lights fade)
